Flavors of Life
Growing Your Own Food
from DailyOM
Growing a garden of food at home is an experience anyone can enjoy. Even a hanging basket of rosemary or a cherry tomato plant in a pot on the windowsill can enhance your connection with the cycle of life. If you have space outdoors, the green and blooming colors of the edible delights you are growing will decorate any view while tempting you to enjoy the outdoors. The edible plants we nurture allow us to literally taste the fruits (or vegetables or herbs) of our labor while helping us more consciously participate in the circulating energy of nature.
Allow yourself to begin slowly and simply, so that you can learn to dance with nature’s intricate orchestrations. There are many experienced gardeners out there to assist you as you choose seeds or small plants to start your garden. As you learn to heed the seasons, soil, sun, frost, and shade, you become more than a mere spectator of life’s cycle. Instead, you step into the role of cocreator and enhance what you nurture. No matter how large or small the size of your garden, you can benefit from growing your own organic, fresh, and nutritious food while also reveling in the depth of flavor and texture that comes from plants that have been well-tended, nurtured, and loved. As we appreciate the food we’ve grown, we can recognize the care that farmers put into the produce most of us buy at the supermarket. With this new understanding, we can acknowledge the roles other living creatures fill as participants in cultivating the cycle of life. We may even learn to peacefully coexist with the animals and insects that share perhaps too great an interest in our garden.
When we grow our food, we participate more fully in nature’s cycles and form a closer bond with Mother Earth. Knowing how to grow your own food allows for a sense of freedom and pride that you can feed and provide for yourself, one of the most basic necessities. Gratitude may fill us as we marvel at the beauty of nature and the majesty of the universe that orchestrates such natural wonders. When we allow our appreciation of life to expand, we harvest so much more than food and the taste is that much sweeter.
My latest dessert post has solicited an intriguing response with one specific word, and I have set out on a quest to understand the meaning of: nom, or om nom
Seems kind of funny, this random word...but it has been popping up in various places. So here is what I found on the Urban Dictionary:
1. om nom
An onomatopoeical adjective based on the sound emitted when something is "oh so tasty" (either through hunger or flavorological value) that one gnaws through it without regard to cleanliness or etiquette. This sort of ravenous eating will often result in an "om nom nom nom" noise being emitted from the eater.
Arthur: Gosh, I haven't eaten for days.
Dirk: Me neither. We're both starving equally.
Arthur: Look! A whole cooked chicken with side of mashed potatoes and a warm/soft dinner roll!
Dirk: We have to decide which of us gets to eat first. To be fair, we should rock-paper-scissors for it.
Arthur: Om nom nom nom nom!
Dirk: Arthur, you're a jerk. A real knee-biter.
2. om nom
The sound of ravenous eating. Popularized by the character Cookie Monster on Sesame street, it is now used commonly in speech, especially among younger people. Cookie Monster exclaims "OM NOM NOM NOM" when gobbling down cookies (and whatever else goes in his mouth).
You can "om nom" on things besides food... for example, play-eating babies' toes to make them laugh.
Just for Fun: omnomnomnom.com is a pop culture website where people submit their own silly photos that have been manipulated in Paint to resemble monsters eating various things, including people and pets.

Finding Freedom In No
Yes People
Many of us, from childhood on, are taught that saying yes is right and
saying no is wrong. We learn that acceding to demands allows us to
avoid conflict and criticism, please people, earn praise, and prove
that we care for the important people in our lives. Yet the right to
say no is indelibly intertwined with the ability to make choices. When
we sense we are limited in our options, compelled to say yes even when
doing so is not in our interests, we are effectively robbed of our
ability to choose. Growing out of this tendency to say yes even when we
desperately want to say no can be challenging because we suspect that
others will reject us for our assertiveness. But the reward we receive
upon facing this challenge is true freedom of choice.
There is nothing inherently wrong with acceding to the requests others make of you, provided these requests do not infringe upon your health or your happiness. Keep in mind that it is only when you feel you have the legitimate right to say no that you can say yes with utmost certainty, sincerity, and enthusiasm. While saying yes almost always has a cost, you can feel good about offering your agreement when your reasons for doing so are rooted in your individual values and your appreciation for the appeal before you.
